Essay on Will the World Really End in 2012 - 983 Words

December 21, 2012: This date has many people wondering why scientists and researchers assume the world will come to an end. Generally, everyone is captivated on the concept of the world’s execution. Hollywood even created a film based on 2012. But is the world really going to come to an end? Are we really going to die because of some calendar that is almost done? Is a giant flare from the sun going burn us all, or an enormous volcanic eruption from a super volcano going to destroy the earth? Considering how we were to have a meltdown in 2000, it is unlikely the world will end. So the talk about the world ending in 2012 could just be that; talk. However, there is scientific evidence that shows the following could contribute to some damage†¦show more content†¦5 years ago, astronomers had found a black hole in the Milky Way. Theory is that the earth will be in an exact alignment with the sun and the Milky Way, which happens once every 25,800 years. But no one knows wha t will happen when the three align; except, the Mayan’s. They believe that it could be catastrophic (Decoding The Past, 2007)The theory that scientists and Mayan’s have come up with is that when the earth, the sun and the Milky Way are aligned; the poles would shift and cause major destruction: from earthquakes to tsunami’s, and forest fires (Decoding The Past, 2007). It does sound farfetched, but there is evidence that the Mayan’s could be right for about 2012. While scientists and geologists get a better understanding of the Mayan calendar, astronomers look at the sun as another way of the world ending. Many don’t know, but the sun does have storms called solar flares. Astronomers say that the earth will come to an end, but it is unlikely it won’t be 2012; more so around 4 billion years from now when the sun looses all of its hydrogen in the center, which will then swell and swallow the inner solar system (ONeill, 2009). Astronomers state that the solar system has an 11 year solar cycle called the solar maximum, which should be peaking soon (Sibeck, 2009). The worst scenario that astronomers declare could happen; is a major disturbance that would hit the poles. Technological advances have engineered many new forms of entertainment, one of the most popular being video games. Video games have come a long way since they were first introduced to the mainstream audience during the 1960’s and 1970’s and have drawn a large amount attraction among people of all ages and culture. However it wasn’t until the Play-station was released that violence became a concern to parents and politics. The level of violence in video games have been in a matter of controversy dating all the way back to the classic games like Pacman and Space Invaders and with the advancement of technology, eventually pushing into more modern and realistic games like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Call of Duty: Ghosts. The experiment started off with several children watching the first video of an adult hitting the Bobo doll with kicks, punches, weapons, and even toy guns and the second video of an adult playing with toys while ignoring the Bobo doll. According to Kutner and Olson (2008), â€Å"Children were more likely to be violent towards the Bobo doll after seeing the acts portrayed on film by the adult.† As a result, when young kids observe violence tend to be more aggressive and hostile. Since violent video games teach children to be violent, aggression will no doubt increase. Following, addiction surrounding video games is becoming an increasing problem as well. Gambino was â€Å"made† or inducted into the Society on his 19th birthday. At age 19 in November 1921, using his family connections from his mother’s family, the Castellanos, who were already established in New York, Gambino left Palermo, Sicily for America. He was smuggled aboard a freighter among crates of wine, olive oil and anchovies that anchored at Norfolk, Virginia. Never becoming a citizen of the United States,Carlo was on the rise to the top of one of the most powerful American Families. Carlo began as an enforcer for the local Society chieftain, Don Vito Cascio Ferro. Carlo would have been happy to remain in Sicily and succeed Don Vito, but the atmosphere of the rise of fascism under Vito Mussolini made it difficult for the Honored Society. Mussolini declared publicly â€Å"he would break the organization†. He worked during the era of prohibition for the Castellano family as a rum runner, a driver and sitting shotgun, eventually moving to another family working for Joe the Boss Masseria’s bootlegging racket. Masseria’s rival was Salvador Maranzano. Carlo joined forces with Lucky Luciano to better serve their enterprises. Luciano wanted to oust both Masseria and Maranzano. On April 15, 1931, Masseria was murdered while at a meeting with Luciano at a Coney Island restaurant. Luciano joined with Maranzano, as the new bosses. Maranzano was shot and stabbed to death in his New York offices on orders from Luciano. This left the door open for Luciano to become the top boss. Luciano divided up the New York turf that turned the Society into a business commission, with each family getting an equal vote. Gambino was assigned to Vincent Mangano, who controlled the Brooklyn wharf. At 29, Carlo was named a capo of his own crew. He brought in Paul Castellano as his aide. Gambino married his first cousin, Paul’s sister, Catherine Castellano, in 1932, at age 30. They raised 3 sons and one daughter, living in a modest row house in Brooklyn. Although it was modest, it was elegant and expensive and it stood out among the other â€Å"modest† row houses. His only real evidence of vanity was his license plate on his Buick, CG1. In 1933, with Prohibition lifted, Gambino moved contraband liquor, selling alcohol without paying government taxes. He was arrested and charged with tax evasion, but he was able to beat the rap, released with a suspended sentence. Gambino invested his profits in a business that was low-key and taboo, running â€Å"Gay Bars† for homosexuals. In 1951, Gambinos boss Vincent Mangano mysteriously disappeared and Albert Anastasia, a vicious killer, took over the family, leading many to believe he had ordered Mangano’s killing. He organized Murder Inc. , which some say never existed. Crime Inc. was supposed to be Anastasias hit squad to keep the families in order. He made Gambino his under boss in 1956. Anastasia was murdered on Oct. 25, 1957, while he was getting a shave at the Park Sheraton Hotel in midtown Manhattan. With a hot towel on his face, two gunmen rushed in and shot him to death. On that day, the Gambino dynasty began. In 1962, Gambinos eldest son Tommy married the daughter of rival boss Thomas Lucchese. Gambino was Shrewd about FBI surveillance, speaking little during meetings and devising a code to discuss business. Carlos illusive behavior drove the feds crazy. He was deliberately illusive and low profile, dressing down and refusing comments to reporters during brief encounters. In 1969, the Gambino Family had over 25 crews with more than 950 men. Carlo was close to Vegas star Frank Sinatra, who did not run from associating with the Gambino family. New York City police, kept a car parked in front of Gambinos home, That was marked â€Å"Organized Crime Control Bureau. † He was under constant surveillance. It was in 1969 that a Gambino crew member, John Gotti, was arrested for hijacking a truck. Carlo Gambino was charged the same year for masterminding an armed robbery truck hijacking. The case was delayed over and over again. In 1971, his wife Catherine died of cancer. Carlos was also in bad health. The loss of his wife was devastating to him. The Feds tried hard to deport Gambino to Sicily. Gambinos doctors proved he had heart trouble and would never be able to make that trip. When the feds were ready to finally deport Gambino, his family, aware of Carlos health, bought off two powerful but always unnamed US Senators, to allow him to remain in the United States. They were to be paid $25,000 a year each for life, if the deportation order could be stopped. It was. How to cite Carols Gambino, Papers

Comparison the difference between eastern and western advertisement free essay sample

With the fast development of globalization, economical communications become more frequently, which brings more inter-cultural advertisements. The purposes of the commercial advertisements are to persuade customers to buy those products and to earn great interests trough describing the products lively and specifically. English, as the most wildly used commercial language, becomes more and more popular. But many companies often pay little attention to the cultural differences between Western and Eastern countries. Most of them just translate their source language advertisement to English, and the result of this consequence is that most of the foreigners cannot understand the meaning of the advertisements; even they will misunderstand the information of the advertisements. Advertisements should adapt to the customers’ minds and meet consumers’ needs. In order to enlarge the abroad markets, businessmen also need to think over the culture background and know the thinking pa tterns of the advertisements and use the powerful impact of the apt advertisements to earn the interest. Nowadays, the world is filled with large amount of information. Anyhow, not all the information could leave deep expression on people. What advertisers should do is to introduce the commodity to the customers by all means and persuade them to purchase the commodity through advertisements. What kind of advertisement could attract the public? What kind of advertisement could help the manufacture gain more profit? What kind of advertisement could be accepted by western people? What kind of advertisement could be accepted by eastern people? So being aware of the thinking patterns of the Western and Eastern ads are of great significance. The aim of this paper is to make comparison between the different thinking patterns of the western and eastern advertisements. â… ¡ The Characteristics of Eastern Advertisements In China, people are deeply influenced by Confuciusian. China nation has regarded nature and human as one harmonious unit, not as separate pieces.  China has a long history, of which advertisers tend to make good use to narrow the gap between the products and consumers. For example, the advertisement of Wahaha beverage saysâ€Å"Ã¥ ¤ ©Ã¥  â€šÃ¦ ° ´Ã¦ ² Ã§Å¡â€žÃ© ¾â„¢Ã¤ ºâ€¢Ã¨Å' ¶Ã¯ ¼Å'Ã¥ ¨Æ'哈哈çŸ ¿Ã¦ ³â€°Ã¦ ° ´Ã¨Å' ¶Ã© ¥ ®Ã¦â€"™â€ . This advertisement makes people feel the Wahaha beverage out of ordinary, but holy and mysterious. So this ad elevates the reputation of the product to some extent and arise the consumers’ desire to buy this goods then achieve the Chinese also have the psychology of hearing nice words, so from Chinese ads many nice words could be seen, such as longevity, happy life forever, good salary, healthy body etc. And eastern people are declined to express emotion in the euphemism tortuous way, which is affected by Confucian ideas—modest and conservative. Chinese culture prefers to family peace and harmonious, this would be connected with the long history and the self-sufficiency family’s economy. People should respect the aged, take care of the youth, and keep good relationship with the relatives, and have the responsibility to help those who are in trouble. For example, in China, there is a popular advertisement â€Å"Parents don’t receipt gifts this year. They just accept naobaijin(ä »Å Ã¥ ¹ ´Ã§Ë† ¸Ã¥ ¦Ë†Ã¨ ¿â€¡Ã¨Å â€š æ” ¶Ã§ ¤ ¼Ã¯ ¼Å'æ” ¶Ã§ ¤ ¼ Ã¥ ªÃ¦â€ ¶ è„‘ç™ ½Ã©â€¡â€˜) † . This is a symbolic advertise in China: when the most important festival—spring festival is coming, in order to show their filial piety, children would like to buy many presents to their parents and grandparents. But which is the best choice among so many goods in th e mall? This ad just meets the important psychology of Chinese consumers, for which this product has a good sales. There is another important characteristic of eastern advertisement—advertisers often use certificates and honor as a tool to attract Chinese consumers. Chinese customers trust in authority very much, such as IS9001 international quality certification system or China famous brand. Those certificates and honor don’t just represent the current quality but the future quality assurance. Owing to this reason, advertiser often put these certificates on the obvious place to evoke customers’ trust. Besides, official laws and regulars give some restricts to the advertisement language. Chinese laws stipulate that ads language be truthful and standardized, any contents about gender discrimination or ethic racial differences or breach of socialist civilization would be forbidden. A female movie star from Taiwan is a spokesperson of thermal protective suit lately. But official don’t allow this advertisement being screened, because the female star is too sexy. At  last, quoting the ancient idiom or phrases is another feature of Chinese advertisement. In many Chinese alcohol advertisements, we can see actors and actresses wearing ancient China style clothes, tasting the alcohol and reading the poetry. This is a symbolic image that appears in the ancient China. â… ¢ The Characteristics of Western Advertisement In contrast with eastern world, western culture insists the pluralistic, which emphasizes varieties of the world and self-development and freedom. So western culture encourages people to conquer the nature and pursues self-character. Advertisements owning these features can seize customers’ purchase. The ad slogan of IBM is a symbolical oneâ€Å"no business too small, no problem too big†. This slogan gives customers an expression that IBM Corporation could deal with any problems. This spirit conform to western value system, and could arise the same feeling that people is the master of the world. The similar slogans include the ad of Nike—just do it. Western advertisements tend to use the strong and direct marketing strategy, and regard a product of the â€Å"immediate results† as a selling point. For example, â€Å"go and get it at once†,â€Å"buy it†,â€Å"fit it well†,â€Å"take action right now†,â€Å"call now†etc. is the common use in foreign ads.ï ¹ Ã‚ ²Ã¯ ¹Å¾ What’s more, western ads describe the product in a direct way and choose the brief words. The slogan of Nestle coffee the taste is great is so classical that Nestle Corporation use it as the permanent slogan. This slogan just expresses the true inner feeling after drinking Nestle coffee, which people accept its direct expression, and which is the point where it is popular and classical. Of all the European and American values, individualism is probably the most basic. They take more emphasis on independence and individualism. So advertisers would like to attract customers attention trough the contents that trough individual efforts to get success in career and increase of social status and material wealth and that display personal characters, ideas, and humor. ï ¹ Ã‚ ²Ã¯ ¹Å¾Another feature of the western ads is that they won’t honor any identification certificates. Western customers would like to trust themselves to purchase the commodities, not rely on the certifications or honor. â… £ Analysis of the Elements of these Differences Take the advertisements of the Toyota Corporation as an example. The slogan of Toyota in the US is â€Å"Not all cars are created equal†. People who know the history of America will understand the first sentence of â€Å"the Declaration of Independence† is â€Å"all men are created equal†. Toyota uses this method to express that the cars of Toyota have better quality than other cars. But when Toyota corporation began to sell cars to China, it changed its slogan—â€Å"è ½ ¦Ã¥Ë† °Ã¥ ± ±Ã¥â€° Ã¥ ¿â€¦Ã¦Å"‰è · ¯Ã¯ ¼Å'æÅ"‰è · ¯Ã¥ ¿â€¦Ã¦Å"‰ä ¸ °Ã§â€ °Ã¨ ½ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ Ã¯ ¼Å' which was applied mechanically an Chinese common saying and were accepted easily by Chinese consumers. There are many elements leading to the different use of the ad languages, such as history, moral rules, environments, religions etc. In a word, it is cultural differences. Language and culture are inseparable. Language is a part of a nation’s culture, from which we can see some symbolic characteristics of this nation; in another hand, culture is the origin of language, which takes great influence and restrict on the language. So a philosophy idea, thinking mode of race, the cultural mental state, moral concept, life style, customs and habits, social system, religion and faith†¦etc, will produce a function to the advertisement language by all means. No matter how the advertisements develop, advertise still covers these influences. Each advertisement has its trace of its native national culture. Owing to the differences of the eastern and western world, the choice of words, the style and the form and the content of the advertisements are very different. â… ¤ Conclusion It is said that, â€Å"While in Rome, do as Rome dose.† This sentence is also useful for advertisement. Take the culture differences into account; know what kind of advertisement content being accepted easily by people from different environments. Only to make the customers have cordial feelings could the products be popular and gain large profits. All successful advertisements are made according to the local culture, including the national culture and advertise culture. There are too many differences between western and eastern cultures. If producer don’t pay attention to the differences of the cultural features, the deal will be fail at last in any cases. It is the truth that a successful advertisement can bring large profit; meanwhile, an unsuccessful advertisement may cause the huge lost of the company and the whole country.

Dolla Lets Make a Toast free essay sample

Dollar Make a Toast Redbrick Anthony Burton II, better known by his rap name Dollar was born on November 25, 1987 In Chicago Illinois. He was born as a twin but his brother ended up dying during birth, leaving him the only boy with two sisters. In 1991 his father moved their family to Los Angles, California for a new life but noticed that times were tougher here than In Chicago. When Dollar was five a big tragedy occurred In his life when his father committed suicide by shooting himself in front of him and his sister Divinity. After his fathers suicide his mother decided to make a move down to Atlanta, Georgia to create a new life for her family. But again financial burdens occurred and by the age of ten Dollar had to help support his family, even if that meant breaking the law. Still through all the struggle he had one dream, and that dream was to become a rapper. To pursue his dream he started writing raps In his elementary school classes. One of my favorite rap songs ever, Make a Toast is the second and final single from rapper Dollars debut album A Dollar and a Dream. The song was produced by Julian Banquet and has an upbeat, triumphant feel to it, even though Julian Banquet Eng the background vocals on the chorus he was not given any credit for being in the song, other than being the producer. Make a Toast is from the twentieth century, it was officially released to radio and tunes on November 4, 2008, but the song had been leaked to the internet long before its official release. The song is three minutes and fifty seconds long and also features the best rapper alive Ill Wayne. It was a very popular song topping off on the U. S. AP charts in 2008 at number seventeen (Wisped). The pitch of a song Is the frequency of the vibrations In a note. When Make a Toast starts the beat has a high pitch, with the song beginning with a ding ding ding sounding beat. This is probably to give the song a sound to get the listeners attention, to kind of set it apart from other rap songs with more of a basic sounding beat. Then at thirty-eight seconds into the song when the chorus ends and when Dollar starts rapping the beat gets a much lower pitch. Then a thumping sounding bass continues through his lyrics. When the song gets to a minute and twenty-seven seconds Ill Wanes part begins with a more of a higher pitch, this is to set his section of the song apart from Dollars. Then after his part the chorus repeats with the same beat that last throughout all of the chorus sections of the song. The last part of the song begins with Dollar rapping, once again this begins with a beat with a high pitch, to set it apart from the chorus. The tone color Is very bright because the song has a faster beat than most songs. Also the lyrics are sang pretty quickly which always has your attention.Vibrato, or changes in pitch, occur quite frequently throughout the entire song. These changes happen during every chorus, every time Dollar, and when All Wayne start rapping, which forces their parts stand out from the chorus. Ill Wayne uses an auto-tune effect during his part, which gives his voice vibrato because it can change the pitch of his vocals. Went into this song. The intonation is absolutely perfect, it seems like everything connects together in this rap song. It seems like the lyrics intervene very well to the rhythm of the beat. All three singers in this song are amazing on how they can rap to the exact same beat and not get out of tune with their singing. The connection from Dollar singing his lyrics to when Julian Banquet starts the background vocals is put together perfectly because there are no weird pauses or anything like that. This is in the chorus right after when Dollar says Make a Toast then Banquets part comes in the background when he says Whoa Oh. Rap singers are absolutely amazing in the way they can hold their breaths for so long and Just sing. Thus, the phrasing, or a musical sentence which usually last until the singer takes a breath, are also very long. This is one of the major reasons I like rap music because they sing a ton of words without taking a break and making the song boring. During this song the only time Dollar or Ill Wayne make a pause to take a breath is after their singing, when the chorus is Just about to begin. This is the only time there is a split second of pausing in between the vocals. The melody in Make a Toast is pretty much the same throughout the entire song.It would be conjunct because the pitches are close together and relatively have the same sound. It is legato because when the beat repeats it is smooth and connected. Most of the newer rap music is like this because the beats are made on a computer and not by instruments. That means that the beat can play over and over and sound exactly the same every time. Most of this song is monophonic, because for almost all the song there is only one arson singing at a time. All three of the singers sing to almost the same rhythm, Just a few changes to the beat when each person starts their part. But every time the chorus is sung part of it has a homophobic melody. This is because right after Dollar say Make a Toast Julian Banquet is in the background saying Whoa Oh. This is considered to be homophobic because their are two people singing at the same time, but they are both in sync with each other and are singing to the same rhythm. I think Make a Toast has a consonant harmony, because I like the lyrics to the Eng and the I enjoy listening to the beat. But then again I pretty much only listen to rap music, so it is the genre of music that I like.So when a new song comes out by an artist I like nine times out of ten I am going to like the song because an artist I enjoy listening to sings it. I also know that someone older in age, around forty and up, would think Make a Toast has a dissonant harmony. And this is mostly because rap music is not the style of music they like listening to. In example, my father would listen to this song and say this song is terrible please turn it off, this shot off it hurts y ears! And I believe this is because he grew up to, and still listen to classic rock, so he will never enjoy the fast beats of hip-hop music. This song, Just like most rap songs, has a fast tempo, which makes this genre of music stand out from the rest. The tempo of this song is allegro, because the beat and the vocals are sound fast. Its only allegro because Vie heard rap songs that are a little faster, but by no means is this song slow. The beat starts from the beginning and Just stays fast until the songs over. The musical dynamics, or the loudness or softness of a musical composition of ere loud beat, and a lot of thumping bass in it, so Dollar and Ill Wayne had to rap loud to be heard. The only time where the music softens up is at two minutes and twenty-five seconds into the song, when Julian Banquets part begins. Here the dynamics change to mezzo forte, because he is not singing too loud or too soft. The formal structure for this song is rondo, because it does not have the normal two or three part form. The vocals are in an BACKED style. The chorus in this song is represented by the A and the verses are the BACKED. This song, Just like most rap songs, does not have a key. A key is the concept of interrelated chords based on the notes of the major and minor scales. The key is indicated at the beginning of each piece by means of a key signature. There was nothing indicated at the beginning of this song to indicate a key. I think this is because the beat of this song was computer generated. Then a tragedy occurred on May 18, 2009 when Dollar was shot outside of the Beverly Center mall in Los Angles. Dollar Just finished eating at P. F. Changes with his brother Scrap Deletion and friend DC Shabby, and was waiting outside in valet for his car when the shooting occurred. Aubrey Louis Berry was the man who shot Dollar ND fled the scene of the crime.Dollar got shot four times, three times in the back, and once in the bicep. He was rushed to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center which was only a few blocks away, but soon after died from his injuries. Berry was later found not guilty of first degree murder. Even though Berry brought the gun to a business lunch at the mall, where the two men spotted each other and exchanged words in the valet area. Berry pleaded not guilty to all charges, and testified in court that he acted in self defense, saying twenty-one year old Dollar threatened to kill him and that he believed he had a gun.Berry and Dollar reportedly were involved in a fight at an Atlanta strip club Just a couple of weeks before the L. A. Shooting. Berrys attorney, Howard Price emphasized the self-defense angle, saying Burtons music and online videos were examples of his supposed gang ties. Prosecutors tried to make the case that police never found a weapon on Burton, and that the musician was shot in the back as he tried to flee. But they could never convict Berry because they believed that the rapper Dollar did have a gun on him when he was shot but one of his friends took it off him after he was shot (Man Charged With Dollars Murder).

Untitled Essay, Research Paper Wyrd. This essay will discourse the novel wryd. It will research some of the constructs that are found in the novel and effort to widen the issues to a point at which they become more clear, and turn out the averment that, merely as Wyrd is a fast moving narrative that spans continents and ages, it is a novel of ideas.Wyrd was, in length, a short to medium novel that was written by Sue Gough. Briefly, it was the narrative of Berengaria, Saladin # 8217 ; s girl and married woman of King Richard. After her hubbies decease, she was moved to a Gallic nunnery with her servant and boy, the prince ( incognito ) . There she kept an explicit and wise journal, entering the events in her life. She founded a healing order, and invented a liqueur that was surprisingly popular among the small town common people. She continued to pattern Viking faith in elusive ways, and encouraged religious openness, as opposed to the dogmatic instructions of the clip, enthroning assurance and a sense of worth in her fellow fans. Pat, her boy, was finally sold as a slave in the in-between E, but the Abbe did non cognize this and told Berengaria the # 8216 ; intelligence # 8217 ; of his death. Unable to get by with such a disclosure, she died and was entombed, as a ma, with her book beneath the priory. Found by two archeologists in modern times, her book was recovered and her grave destroyed. Sent to a group of Australian adult females ( in order to maintain it out of the claws of the modern De Ville, Professor Horniman ) , the book found it # 8217 ; s manner into the custodies and bosom of Trace, a street child from Sydney, come North as portion of a modern kids # 8217 ; s campaign. Unwilling to return to the slums of Kings Cross, Trace had found her manner to the adult females # 8217 ; s places and beguiled herse- low frequency of them. To reason the narrative, Professor Horniman attempted to steal the book, and it was destroyed. All of this was spoken by one Dr Renouf ( a possible hereafter Trace and modern twenty-four hours Berengaria ) , in an effort to pull together the warring cabals of the in-between east. One of the most primary subjects in the book, evident even in the sum-up, is the repeat of events: return and echoing of past events and people. The adhering togss of clip, so to talk, are changeless and absolute: even in different times, the same forces are still at work throughout the novel. The degree Celsius alteration of scene is incidental, and the characters are a changeless equalling force. The kids # 8217 ; s campaign, the constructs of war and peace, good and evil are all tied together in the secret plan, past mirroring hereafter. However, another subject that is of import is the power of the open ( * # 8211 ; wyrd, the space Viking runic letter, is the runic letter of # 8216 ; possibly # 8217 ; ) , and the results are different # 8212 ; Professor Horniman was defeated, De Ville was non. Although this lone lead to Horniman # 8217 ; s licking, it was significant, and the cosmic superbeing could hold turned to favor the powers of # 8216 ; good # 8217 ; ( Berengaria, Trace, the Wyrd sisters/the three adult females ) or # 8216 ; evil # 8217 ; ( De Ville/Horniman, war, etc ) . The hereafter is simply a continuance of the past, but events may be replayed. Change merely occurred with regard for the hereafter, the yesteryear remained stained, but was a valuable lesson. The repeat of events occurred chiefly because lessons of the past were ignored, and present alterations are the force behind the it # 8217 ; s surcease. The clean runic letter, the open hereafter, the last, blank page in the old Queen # 8217 ; s diary, are all a agencies by which these events can occur: alteration and geographic expedition of possibilities is critical to let continuance. Who controls the past controls the degree Fahrenheit uture merely in that the yesteryear is portion of the present and the present is what controls future events.Another subject, discussed chiefly in the book # 8217 ; s womens rightist undertones, is one that is to a great extent dianoetic of the regulations of society. Religious tenet, meaningl ess legal Hagiographas, unwritten regulations puting different people in state of affairss beyond their control, and the construct of elitism # 8212 ; our category system, are all discussed, if briefly, in the texts. Non conformance was all but preached: it clearly stated that the regulations of society, the Torahs we make for ourselves, are non compatible with the demands of the people. Religious Torahs were obeyed to the missive in the chief clip frame and our ain, to a lesser extent because times have changed: Berengaria was a nun, and De Ville was an Abbe. The Torahs that govern Christianity are largely good, but intercession on the portion of the church, frequently with the best of purposes, can take an uneducated and oppressed society ( like that of, say, mediaeval England or France ) into ruins. In the novel, Berengaria was seen to actively opposed regulations she thought were # 8216 ; incorrect # 8217 ; , and refused to subject to the system: a ego perpetuating autarchy, in which the supreme power lies in the ability to bluff and drop the ball through state of affairss, and maintain a crowd entertained. Her major disadvantage, at least at that clip, was the fact that she was a adult female: strong, intelligent and a leader, yes, but bing in a clip and world that did non judge a individual by such qualities. Power in our society is driven by corruptness, in many instances, and hope for the hereafter lies in the powers that be. The same was true, to extremes, in Berengaria # 8217 ; s clip, but her cognition and personal appeal were non about to be bound by half-truths and prevarications ( the prevarications seeded by her clip # 8217 ; s power system ) . In any clip and any system there are the high, the center and the low. The purpose of the high is to remain at that place, the center want to acquire at that place, and the low privation to last. With a few exclusions, a system that acknowledges and works with this societal and economic hierarchy is one that allows for really small personal growing: true now and so. Her system and ours are clearly corrupted by this and the novel clearly demands that we do something about it. The unwritten, unknowable hereafter is a powerful force here: the hereafter is the right topographic point to flight to.Another powerful and repeating issue is that of cognition: it # 8217 ; s power, importance, and ultimate truths. Learning and self mending are of import factors discussed by Berengaria in her life and Hagiographas, factors that affected people in many different ways. She understood the importance of apprehension and wisdom and shared it with others, who gained those qualities and shared it with others # 8230 ; ..etc. Learning is a mighty influence that can mend lesions and dispersed enlightenment. In many ways it is the lone force by which to contend corruptness, but seeds must be planted. The complete amalgam of cognition discussed in the novel is contained about entirely in Berengaria # 8217 ; s book, which planted it # 8217 ; s seeds in many ways. It shared it # 8217 ; s message of mending and medicative traditional knowledge with nurses and other assorted therapists ; it shared it # 8217 ; s cognition of love and spiritualty with the emotionally hermit, promoting growing and healing ; it shared it # 8217 ; s artistic beauty and cognition of the miscellaneous admirations of our planet with the artistically inclined, heightening their lives and through them: ours. The construct of the hunt for the ego is another invariable in this novel: people with no individuality grow and learn to go their ain individual, alone and independent: through cognition. It is through cognition and apprehension that peace can be won: the hope lies non merely in the unknown but in the ability to do it
